first off all sorry for my spelling, i´m a bit worn out after a 1180 km. drive in at truck
I talked to Anita, Chris, Jari, Risto, Stig, Fast Freddy and Bruno Bader
they all wanted to race or do something for the crowd. Anita felt sorry everybody, crowd, drivers and staff, nobody did this on purpose. Risto would like som more effort from FIA inspecting the track before all the racers left home. I´m sure they did before the F 1 event. Chris was asking why every thing on his car had to be inspected and send to USA, and nobody have too inspect the track?? Jari talked abouth the big expenses for the teams. Freddy said that the track was vorse then when he went on ice!!! they tried the grip on the track and on a wood table.....the tabel had more grip. Bruno wanted to run, and he was wery sad that the other drivers would not, he thought that he could set up his car for the track.
I try to write this i an objective way.
I feel sorry for the 68000-70000 fans who came and saw nothing. I feel sorry for the drivers who wanted to drive and i fell sorry for the organisers because i fear that nobody will come next year.
Stig made his 5.7 something by not pulling the trottlestop out after the burnout ;-)
Anita's weekend.
15th August: Finnish Top Fuel Dragster racer Anita Mäkelä has been in touch with a review of her weekend at Hockenheim:
I feel so sorry for the spectators.
I feel so sorry for the officials.
I feel so sorry for us racers and teams.
This should not ever happen: a spoilt track
The surface of the drag strip is supposed to be even when running Top Fuel Dragsters. This weekend the Hockenheim track was not.
After Friday's qualifying was cancelled, we were scheduled to have three rounds on the Saturday.
On the first run we turned all the power down as much as we could without hurting the engine.
Instant smoke and pan pressure activated the automatic shut off system and I stopped on the middle of the track with open chutes.
The second and third round were driven on the throttle stop, times were 6.9 and 6.1.
But that was not racing. It was a lottery. And when the speeds were growing, it was getting dangerous.
Our cars need to meet FIA safety regulations.
But it takes two for racing: a car and a track.
I'm wondering where was the FIA sanctioning body to tell everyone that this was not safe for Top Fuellers any more and to call the race off. Safety must be the number one issue always and I'd be amazed if this isn't the FIA's rôle and duty.
We tried to run there but it was simply too dangerous for racing.
Show runs are of course different thing. It was a pleasure to run in the Night Show with Janne Ahonen. It is a unique feeling the be a part of that great show.
To sit there in my dragster surrounded by that fantastic crowd made my weekend! What a feeling again! Super Show!
Sorry that we couldn't give the audience the best possible racing, but 6.9 and 7.1 runs were all we could do. But we were smiling all evening.
Anyway, I just love Hockenheim. Hockenheim has had the reputation as the fastest track. I look forward breaking my records there again in the future.
Jerry Lackey said to me sunday night as we were packing, that FIA will not come to Hockenheim as long as he lives.
