Re: Alte Mopar (UScar) Bilder
Doug Morrell
Thanks for all the positive reactions to my prior two posts of our family Chrysler New Yorker wagon. I had indicated that it was replaced in favor of a bigger wagon, so this is it, the yellow one (on the left). I estimate it is a 1966, but I’ll leave the dating up to you.
The scene is July 1969 and we’re traveling with another family from Syracuse to Northport, Michigan. This trip is particularly etched in my memory because shortly after arrival at the Northport campground (Timber Shores, anyone know it?), we gathered around a small B&W TV to watch the grainy images of Neil Armstrong’s first walk on the moon. So if I had to date the picture, it is either on that exact day or up to two days prior to July 20, 1969.
So where is this? I don’t know. Can’t say if was a rest area why didn’t we pull in farther? We probably stopped for lunch, as I don’t see signs of any mechanical issues. I seem to recall one of my teenage older sisters saying something about the parents “needing a quickie”, but that went over my head at the time, and I could be mistaken regardless.
Look closely and you’ll see something on top of the yellow Chrysler. That is a plastic Boston Whaler dinghy Dad bought, complete with a sail kit. Being a Navy and Merchant Marine man, he had visions of sailing it in Grand Traverse Bay. I don’t recall how successful that turned out, but it was the last time the dinghy came on a trip with us.
The Chrysler would be traded shortly after in favor of a custom ordered 1969 Chevy Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4. That one was a beast. Not sure if I have a pic of it or not.
